Why is Dermatology Important?
Our skin is the largest organ of our body. We know that it constantly works to keep nutrients in and outside influences such as chemicals and bacteria out, but what can it tell us about our health? Skin problems are one of the most common causes of health care visits in the United States, and many skin complaints are treated with topical prescriptions. In fact, one in 4 or 84.5 million Americans were impacted by skin disease according to the American Academy of Dermatology. While this type of treatment can help alleviate symptoms to a degree, what can we do to treat the root cause of common skin problems so that they resolve? Common symptoms such as itching, redness, flushing, hives, pimples, and dry skin can give us many important clues about what is going on inside our body. Gut bacteria imbalances and food sensitivities, for example, can emerge as rashes and discoloration on the skin. Many autoimmune conditions can manifest with different types of skin symptoms and rashes. Nourishing and balancing the skin from the inside out with targeted nutrition, healthy sleep habits, stress awareness and relief, and lifestyle considerations can support healthy skin from within for a lifetime.
